Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Pt. 2

Wednesday, August 7, 2013

After the Museum, we drove all the way back down - past the beginning of the park to check out the lava tube.  According to wikipedia, a lava tube is a... "natural conduit through which lava travels beneath the surface of a lava flow, expelled by a volcano during an eruption. They can be actively draining lava from a source, or can be extinct, meaning the lava flow has ceased and the rock has cooled and left a long, cave-like channel."  The tube way amazing, it is so awesome how nature works.  Walking to the tube, and once out of it - the air was hot and muggy; however, inside the tube the air was cool - like the perfect balance of a well controlled AC unit.  Unfortunately the lights that were put up in the tube weren't condusive to picture taking, but please enjoy the pictures on the walk leading to the tube and the entrance!

Lastly, on our trip to the Hawaii Volcano National Park, we went down the Chain of Craters Road that took us from the top of the park - all the way down to the coast line to see possible active lava flows (a 23 mile road (46 miles down and back up)).  The Chain of Craters Road was super long and was a bit testy on my patience - but definitely worth the time (and gas!!)

After the trip we picked up some lunch, checked into the hotel, relaxed, then got ready for a big family dinner at my Aunty's house in Kaumana (approximately 50 people - including children).  It was a blast.  The kids went crazy over all of the frogs that came out on the front lawn after the sun set, let alone the sound of the coqui frogs in the trees.  All in all it was a good first day!  We were all pooped out by the time we got back to the hotel and called it a night.

Later on I'll be sharing the rest of our trip to Hilo and some of my fave stops before going home!

xoxo, Aukele
