A Shift in My Sails

Thursday, September 18, 2014

It seems like forever since I’ve been talking about passion, direction and changes in regards to this blog, what I’m doing with my life and how I’m working towards setting up a reliable passive income.  I’ve tried all sorts of methods, listened to many podcasts from successfully self-employed online business owners, lost some money in the process (and made some) – and I’ve come full circle and landed exactly where I started; yet there has been a shift, and I can literally feel the winding shifting my sails on this boat called life.

Everything is clicking and coming together so effortlessly that it just feels right, and I am completely trusting my gut feelings and instincts on this one.  A few months ago I shared that I wanted to start a food blog (history – my first true attempt at blogging, I shared *real shocker* recipes).  Though it may have taken forever and I still have work to do on the site (branding, adding widgets, setting up automated social media posts, etc.) things are still falling into place!  For instance – in August I was accepted as contributor for Ashley Griffith’s (of The Gnarly Whale) Hello Nature blog where I am sharing healthy recipes (first recipe coming out towards the end of September).

I also received my first “freebie” of sorts in the blogging world.  That makes me official, right?  I really love this “one brand” of chips.  Randomly I went on their website, and hello – hi they had a dedicated spot for bloggers.  So I moseyed on through and just sent a note that I really love their products and left my contact info.  What do you know?  Their PR lady sends me an email asking if I’d like to be sent some free products and if I’d like to do recipes and reviews and before I could even respond, a box of my favorite chips showed up at my door!  I can’t wait to share them on my food blog with some fantastic dip recipes, which is quite perfect since it’s FOOTBALL SEASON!!

Through this last year, I’ve learned that all along I didn’t need to look for my passion, it was right in front of my face.  All things food related comes so easy for me and is something that I truly enjoy.  Come to Hawaii and I’ll tell you about ten MUST EAT restaurants right off the bat and what you MUST order.  Need something quick to fix for dinner or dessert?  I can probably give you a recommendation if you tell me what you is in your fridge and pantry.  So where do I go from here?

Well – Step One - create a food blog.  Done and done.  Step Two – brand it.  I’ve kind of skipped on this one and put it on the back burner for now, because step three is more important to me right now.  Step Three – create content.  I have recipes lined up with pictures all edited, I am just taking a while/procrastinating writing the stories or content behind them.  Also I want to create other food related content such as sharing my favorite restaurants that I visit, product reviews (kitchen gadgets and food), a link series promoting other food blogs and their recipes and the like.  Step Four – monetize.  This will come eventually and I’ve already whipped up some ideas in my head of e-cookbooks and food safety guides that are family friendly and not so commercial (professionally I am a Certified Dietary Manager and Certified Food Protection Professional; as in I took a national test and pay a membership fee to use those credentials on a yearly basis, and must attain continuing education credits to keep my certification).

So that is my focus as far as creating a place that I love that I can work towards to *one day* build a reliable passive income.

What’s in store for 91 Dash?  Right now I’m using Melyssa’s tool to sort out everything that is in my head and create a more defined vision.  I already know the new name of the blog which helps and have secured the URL associated with it – but one thing at a time!

PS: You should go and check out the recipes that have been posted so far on Whippin Kitchen and tell me what you think about it!  Corned Beef and Onions  |  Seasoned Almonds  |  Easy Peasy Brownies

  1. Hi Erika - thank you! I think I doubted my passion. It wasn't good enough for me (in my mind); yet when everyone around you compliments you on something or realizes your strength... ding ding ding hello! Its time to see the light :-)!!

  2. Oh, I get this more than you know! It always feels like everyone else's gifts are better ones to have than mine... even if people compliment me on mine!!!
